چکیده

Today we’ll describe a new family of codes, called algebraic-geometry codes. These codes generalize Reed-Solomon codes and yield surprisingly good codes over constant sized alphabets. We’ll motivate the codes from two points of view. First we’ll show how they challenge the “conjectured converse of the Gilbert-Varshamov bound”. We’ll then motivate the codes from the algebraic perspective. The reader is warned that this lecture is not self-contained. It describes the “nature” of the codes without showing how to construct them, or why they even exist.

Gales and supergales are equivalent for defining constructive Hausdorff dimension

We show that for a wide range of probability measures, constructive gales are interchangable with constructive supergales for defining constructive Hausdorff dimension, thus generalizing a previous independent result of Hitchcock [2] and partially answering an open question of Lutz [5].

Bounds for covariances and variances of truncated random variables

We show that a lower bound for covariance of min(X 1 , X 2) and max(X 1 , X 2) is cov (X 1 , X 2) and an upper bound for variance of min(X 2 , max(X, X 1)) is var (X) + var (X 1) + var (X 2) generalizing previous results. We also characterize the cases where these bounds are sharp.

Notes on Correlation Functions in ( 0 , 2 ) Theories

In this short note we shall review some recent work [KS] on certain correlation function calculations in perturbative heterotic strings, generalizing the rational curve counting of the A model to analogues of the 27 3 coupling. Part of the motivation for this work comes from attempts to understand (0,2) mirror symmetry. Recall that ordinary mirror symmetry relates pairs of Calabi-Yau manifolds....

Orbifolds and Solitons

We propose a conformal field theory description of a solitonic heterotic string in type IIA superstring theory compactified on K3, generalizing previous work by J. Harvey, A. Strominger and A. Sen. In ten dimensions the construction gives a fivebrane which is related to the fundamental type II string by electric – magnetic duality, and to the Dirichlet fivebrane of type IIB string theory by SL(...

Explicit Constructions of Infinite Families of Mstd Sets

We explicitly construct infinite families of MSTD (more sums than differences) sets, i.e., sets where |A+A| > |A−A|. There are enough of these sets to prove that there exists a constant C such that at least C/r of the 2 subsets of {1, . . . , r} are MSTD sets; thus our family is significantly denser than previous constructions (whose densities are at most f(r)/2 for some polynomial f(r)). We co...
